Motivational Interviewing (MI) uses a guiding style to engage with patients, clarify their strengths and aspirations, evoke their own motivations for change, and promote autonomy of decision making.
What will attendees learn at this event / workshop?
There are differing approaches to the wording of the stages involved in MI but all focus on the basic premise of:
- Resisting the urge to offer solutions
- Understanding where the individual is in relation to awareness of their condition / treatment options
- Listening to the individual’s expressed opinions and thoughts, and then
- Encouraging engagement to support whatever next steps need to be made to move them into a better position, as understood by them, not the health professional.
